Charles E. Schumer
Charles E. Schumer, also known as “Chuck”, is a Democrat senator from the state of New York. Over the years, Senator Schumer has built a reputation of being a leader and fighter for his state of New York.
Chuck was born and raised in Brooklyn by his father and mother, Selma and Abe. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1974, Chuck returned to New York and ran for the New York State Assembly and became the youngest member of the State Legislation since Theodore Roosevelt. He later represented the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn and Queens for eighteen years and established his reputation as a “pioneer in the fight against crime and as a consumer advocate” (“Biography”). Chuck wrote the Omnibus Crime Bill which put 100,000 new cops on the street, was the leading sponsor of the Violence Against Women Act which combated domestic violence and sexual assault, co-wrote the Assault Weapons Ban, sponsored the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and sponsored legislation that required banks and credit card companies to provide greater discloser to consumers, just to name a few of Chuck’s memorable moments representing the 9th Congressional District.
In 1998, Chuck was elected to the US Senate and later became New York’s senior senator when Senator Daniel Moynihan retired in 2000. One of the first things Chuck did while in the Senate was announce that he would “visit each of New York’s 62 counties every year, a tradition he continues today” allowing him to stay in touch with voters from all over the state (“Biography”).
Throughout his time in the Senate, Chuck has made it his priority to improve the economy of New York. He does so by bringing affordable air to upstate New York as well as the Hudson Valley. He also wrote the legislation that eliminated barriers that delay low-cost generic medications from entering the marketplace and “led the charge to make make college tuition tax deductible” (“Biography”). He is also a huge supporter of programs for New York’s dairy farmers and crop growers. However, his most “heroic” accomplishment as Senator was delivering over twenty billion dollars in aid to New York City after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
After being re-elected in 2004, 2006, and 2008, Senator Charles Schumer has been awarded numerous powerful positions including; a seat on the Senate Finance Committee which oversees the nation’s tax, trade, social security, and health care legislation and the Chairmanship of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) which he resigned from at the end of 2008. He has also been appointed to serve as Vice Chair of the Democratic Conference and selected as the Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee which oversees “federal elections, voting rights, campaign finance, and the operation of the Senate complex” (“Biography”). He sits on the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; the Judiciary Committee, where he is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees, and Border Security; the Joint Economic Committee, where he is the Vice Chairman; and the Joint Committee on the Library, just to name a few of the many other things that Chuck does as a Senator (“Biography”).
