Government CC/ 2nd Block 22 September 2010 Senator: Chuck Grassley Senator Chuck Grassley was born on September 17, 1933 in New Harford Iowa. He married Barbra Speicher in 1954. Throughout their marriage they had five children: Lee, Wendy, Robin, Michele, and Jay. Before Chuck Grassley became a senator he worked on the family farm and afterward as a sheet shearer from 1959 to 1961 along with working in an assembly line from 1961 to 1971. Senator Grassley received a Bachelor Degree in 1955 and then a Masters in Political Science in 1956 from the University of Northern Iowa. He was elected to Iowa Legislature in 1958. In 1974, Mr. Grassley was elected into the U.S. House of Representatives and later to the Senate in 1980. Chuck Grassley is a member of the Farm Bureau. His son Robin currently operates the family farm after his father left. Also, he is a member of the Butler County and State of Iowa Historical Societies, Pi Gamma Mu, Kappa Delta Pi, and the International Association of Machinists from 1962 to 1971. (Senator Grassley at a glance) Along with all the memberships Chuck Grassley is active on many committees, for example, the Finance Committee where he is a high ranking member due to being the most senior Republican. He is also a senior member on the Judiciary Committee. Chuck Grassley has served on this committee as long as he has been in the Senate. Senator Grassley is the only working family farmer serving on the senate Agriculture Committee. This Committee is responsible for oversight of the U.S. Department of Agriculture along with many other important things. Senator Grassley the Co-Chairman for the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control. In addition, he is on the Budget Committee and Joint Taxation Committee. (Senator Grassley is a member of the following Senate committees) A 2006 survey by the National Association of Counties ranks methamphetamine as the number one drug problem by 79 percent of Iowa counties. Senator Grassley wants to raise awareness of illegal drugs especially methamphetamines. Illegal Drugs create crime rings that launder money an estimated $60 billion per year in tax evasions which places a burden on local law enforcement, criminal justice, along with public health systems. Senator Grassley started a state wide initiative to address Iowa’s drug problem called “Face It Together” AKA FIT. FIT’s main purpose was to help keep schools, workplaces and communities drug-free. Chuck Grassley states: “As Iowa's senior U .S. Senator, I strongly support community anti-drug coalitions and Drug Free Communities grant participants”. (Drugs) Senator Grassley believes that higher education such as attending college should not cost as much as it does. He believes that college students should be able to graduate with out worrying about student loans or parents worried about saving college expenses. Chuck Grassley wants to make sure that tax breaks for colleges and universities written into the federal tax code are cost-effective, efficient and working as intended. Grassley has been a leading advocate for talented and gifted children in the United States Congress. He wants children to reach their full potential related to education. Mr. Grassley believes that through the No Child Left Behind Act this could help expand the benefits availability of gifted education services. (Education) Chuck Grassley has been apart of the senate for over thirty years and has improved and helped the state of Iowa. It is unknown when the next election for Chuck Grassley will occur.
