Frank R. Lautenburg
When I was first told that I was to pick a senator from a list of the entire nation’s senators I said, okay I want a democrat and I want him to be from New York. While all of New York’s senators were taken, I did find Frank R. Lautenburg, a democrat from New Jersey. While he is not my first choice, he is a very interesting man.
According to Frank R. Lautenburg’s official website, Frank R. Lautenburg was born in Paterson, New Jersey to a poor immigrant couple. The Lautenburgs were forced to move from place to place accepting minor jobs in order to keep their family from starving. At nineteen, Mr. Lautenburg’s father died so Frank worked nights and weekends until he graduated high school. He then joined the Army Signal Corps and served until the war was over. Then he attended Columbia University where he earned a degree in economics. After college, he and two of his friends started Automatic Data Processing, the nation’s first payroll services company.
After his stint as a CEO, Lautenburg decided to give back to the community by running for office. He was elected to the Senate in 1982, then again in 1988 and 1994, then again in 2002 and 2008.
Mr. Lautenburg has special interests in many of New Jersey’s issues but also issues concerning the nation. His first issue is the education system of New Jersey. He believes an educated person is a successful person. He believes that college degrees should be more affordable to everyone. He is also working to make dorms safer for the college students.
Preventing gun violence and crime is another issue Mr. Lautenburg feels passionate about. He recently wrote a law that protects women and children from domestic abuse from people who own guns. He is also fighting to close the “gun show loophole” in which anyone is able to buy a gun without a background check. He is also in favor of data that says when a suspected terrorist purchases a gun.
Frank Lautenburg is constantly fighting to make sure that the good people of New Jersey have good and affordable healthcare. He is currently in favor of a bill that would create no discrimination against children with pre-existing conditions, promote coverage for young adults, and create tax credits for small businesses so they can provide healthcare for their employees.
Another issue that is near and dear to his heart is the environment. Mr. Lautenburg supports a regulation on toxic chemicals and keeping the Jersey Shore clean. He’d also like to fight global warming by cutting carbon emissions and finding alternative means of energy.
One of the last issues that Frank R. Lautenburg is an out-speaker is transportation. He would like to equip New Jersey with a reliable train service. That way gas prices would go down and people could get to work without even taking their cars. He has also written “common sense laws” that say the legal limit for driving under the influence is .08 blood alcohol and twenty-one is the legal drinking age. He also wrote law banning “killer trucks” or trucks carrying three trailers notorious for getting into lethal accidents.
Frank R. Lautenburg serves on three Senate committees: Approbations; Commerce, Science, and Transportation; and Environment and Public Works. Senator Lautenberg serves on six Appropriations subcommittees: Homeland Security; Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies; Energy and Water Development; Financial Services and General Government; State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs; and Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies. Senator Lautenberg serves on four Commerce subcommittees: Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety and Security; Aviation Operations, Safety and Security; Communications, Technology and the Internet; and Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard. Senator Lautenberg serves on three EPW subcommittees: Superfund, Toxics, and Environmental Health; Transportation and Infrastructure; and Water and Wildlife (Frank). Frank R. Lautenburg seems like a very nice man. A lot of the issues he supports are really great. If I lived in New Jersey and was of legal voting age, I would certainly vote for Mr. Lautenburg.
