Harry Reid Harry Reid was born on December 2, 1939 in the small mining town of Searchlight, Nevada. His father was a hard rock miner and in was in Searchlight where he was taught to value hard work, opportunity, and independence (www.reid.senate.gov). He graduated from Southern Utah state College in 1959, Utah State University in 1961, and George Washington School of Law in 1964 (Washington Post). Harry was elected into the Senate in 1986 and is now the Majority Leader in the U.S. Senate (www.reid.senate.gov). Since being elected, he has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach. The major issue that Harry Reid focuses on is the youth. He believes juveniles should not be locked up because of minor offences; he supported the passage of the Reconnecting Homeless Youth Act in 2008, and provided tax relief for families with children (reid.senate.gov). Earlier in this year he hosted the Nevada Non-Profits Children’s Summit on Child Welfare. He championed, throughout his time in the Senate, for better pay, benefits, equipment, and medical care. Other issues he’s concerned about is the Economy, Education, Energy, the environment, healthcare, homeland security, housing, immigration, law enforcement, social security, taxes, technology, transportation, veterans, women, and Yucca Mountain. In 1982, Senator Reid was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-eighth Congress and was reelected and served from January 3, 1983 to January 3, 1987. Then in 1986 he was elected to the United States Senate, reelected in 1992, 1998, and in 2004 for the term ending January 3, 2011. From January 3-20, 2001 he was the chair of the Committee on Environment and Public Works. Reid was a part of the Select Committee on Ethics from January 3-20, 2001; June 6, 2001-January 3, 2003. (Washington Post) Harry Reid is a very prominent and well-known political figure, but is infamous as well for a certain slur at the president. In January 2010, he stated calling Barack Obama as a "light-skinned" African-American who lacked a "Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one (politico.com)." This is why he believed Obama got elected. He quickly apologized for the statement that he made because his reelection was in question. He is still dealing with that now.
