Jeanne Shaheen
Jeanne Shaheen is a senator for New Hampshire and is from the Democrate party. She was the first woman to be elected as a governor and a senator and was also the first woman governor of New Hampshire (“About Jeanne”). Her previous careers include: teaching high school, being a chairman for a zoning board, and serving three terms in the State Senate. Neither of her parents attended college, however she received her master's degree from the University of Mississippi. While she was governor, she aimed to make college more affordable, kindergarten public, and give children affordable health coverage. Along with those goals, she made 67,000 jobs during her time as governor. One of her main priorities was to focus on the small business and she helped bring competition to electric industry in New Hampshire. While she was governor, she put through the HMO Accountability Act to prevent discrimination against small business with elderly/sick workers.
She got both political parties to work together in New Hampshire to the Clean Power Act. This lowers the power plants' emissions and was the first in the nation. The Land and Community Investment Program was also passed. This preserved hundreds of thousands of acres and 88 historic places. Four hundred million dollars were saved because of the energy efficiency programs that she instated. Because of the balanced budget that she proposed, New Hampshire tripled their Rainy Day Fund. During her time as Governor, New Hampshire had the lowest state taxes in the Nation. She signed in civil rights legislation that made illegal to discriminate against sexual orientation and also declared Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a state holiday. She became a member of the U.S. Senate in 2009 and serves on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and chairs the European Affairs Subcommittee.
In her committees, she is working to strengthen ties overseas, boost the U.S. Economy, and build U.S.'s National Security. Her subcommittee has jurisdiction over NATO, the European Union, and energy security issues. In U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources they are working towards clean and renewable energy and energy efficiency.
