Mark Begich Bio
Mark Begich was born on March 30 1962, in Anchorage Alaska, where he was raised.
His political career began when he was elected to the Anchorage Assembly in 1988, and was a
member until 1998. He served as a democrat, and made an attempt to run for mayor in 2000. He
also held the assembly chair. He eventually won the mayoral race in 2003. In 2008 he ran against
Republican Ted Stevens, and won. Part of this was because Ted Stevens was accused of failing
to report financial campaign gifts, which is a felony. Republicans tried to hold a special second
election because the accusations gave Begich an unfair advantage. among others, Sarah Palin
backed this, but it was eventually denied.
As a member of the United States Congressional Senate he is a member of the
Committees of Armed Services, Veteran's Affairs, Commerce Science and Transport, and the
Budget, as well as innumerous sub commitees. He is a moderate Democrat who is for same
sexed marriage and is pro-choice. He doeshowever supports gun rights, including transporting
and concealing weapons This is rather unique for a Democrat, as they tend to be for tighter gun
control. Though he is generaly opposed to death penalty, he believes there are exceptions, again,
unique amongst Democrats. He has also helped streamline the national budget, and redirected
funds to the stimulus package. His particular aim is to make living more affordable for middle
class families. He funds education and the environment, and promotes cheap renewable energy.
His environmental support involves conservation but also respects the rights of Alaskan natives
to hunt these species as their traditional way of life.
Over all he is slightly more moderated and libertarian than most Democrats, however his
career as a congressmen is still relatively young and there is much to see that is yet to be done.
So far he has quickly rose to a prominent position and is experienced and specialized in
financial and budget issues. He lives with his wife Deborah and their son Jacob, and spends
much of his time outside of politics with his family.
