He received his JD at the University of Virginia and his BA at Yale University. He has over thirty years experience in public service. Before becoming a Senator, Bill Nelson was an attorney. He also severed in the U.S. Army ("Contacting the Congress"). Bill Nelson does have past experience in politics, before being in the Senate. He held the position of Florida Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal ("Senator Bill Nelson"). He also served in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Orlando. Now he is a Senator for Florida. Bill Nelson, obliviously, currently lives in Florida. Along side him, are his wife, Grace and two children, Nan Ellen and Bill Jr. ("Contacting the Congress"). Since November 7th, 2000, Bill Nelson has severed in the Senate. He serves as a part of the Democrat party. In the Senate, he has been apart of six major committees: the Senate Special Committee on Aging, the Senate Committee on Armed Services, the Senate Committee on the Budget, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, the Senate Committee on Finance, and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Within those committees, Bill Nelson has served on ten subcommittees: the Subcommittee on Seapower, the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, and the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, under the Senate Committee on Armed Forces, the Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security, the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet, the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance, and the Subcommittee on Science and Space, under the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and lastly the Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources, and Infrastructure, the Subcommittee on Health Care, and the Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions, and Family Policy, under the Senate Committee on Finance. Also within Congress, Bill Nelson is known as the leading congressional expert in NASA ("Contacting the Congress"). These Committees and Subcommittees represent many of Senator Bill Nelson’s interests within the Government and Congress. Bill Nelson fights for many issues in the Senate. The issues range from many important topics: Education, Medicare, and Oil to name a few. To further awareness and support for these issues, Bill Nelson introduced many different types of legislation in the 107th, the 108th, the 109th, the 110th, and the 111th Congress. His “hot topics” currently include: Offshore Drilling, Health Care, and Overseas Military Operations. He does not support off shore drilling. He believes that the U.S needs to look at other means of obtaining oil. He does support the Military being in Afghanistan. He thinks Al Qaeda and the Taliban are still a threat to the U.S so we must be there. Our national security depends on it. But, the U.S. needs to wind down in Iraq and come out (“Hot Topics”). By 2012, Bill Nelson will have served in Congress for twelve years. At this time, he will be up for reelection. His predicament is Similar to House Reprehensive Randy Forbes.
